How to Choose a Domain Name For a Social Bookmarking Website

If you plan to start your own social bookmarking website, the very first thing to do is to choose a name for it. Below are some basic rules if you're looking to create a top notch bookmarking website:

#1) Choose one of the most popular TLDs. .com is always the best. Avoid cheap TLDs like .info.

#2) The name must be "very" unique. The branding is one of the most important factors on this niche. Some good examples are Digg, Reddit, Mixx, Squidoo, Kojaxx etc. Avoid long names containing common words (eg: MyOnlineBookmarks).

#3) Make sure that your name can be easily pronounced. Avoid strange letter combinations like Ekw, Dqz etc.

#4) Avoid special characters like numbers and hyphens.

#5) The short names are better than the longer ones, but the very short pronounceable names are really hard to find. If you get a 4-characters pronounceable .com name then you're very very lucky.

Hello, Thanks for sharing the tips about getting a domain name for a social bookmarking site. I really liked it. But I got one question to ask you. I want to make a social bookmarking site but cannot manage a web developer for making one. So which is the best ready made script for making a social bookmarking site. I have heard about Digg but I have seen in their forum that there has not been much development recently. And there is no free theme to use for the new version. Can you suggest any other script like Digg because I cannot find one

The best script I know is Pligg (http://www.pligg.com). Unfortunately the default theme looks outdated and there are many other things that should be updated or configured to have a professional bookmarking website. Pligg is mostly focused on social news (like Digg).

But there are some good news:

Thanks, I have already opened up a Pligg site now.. I am waiting for you to release the modified version of Pligg. By the way will we be able to upgrade from wht pligg version we are using if we want to use your script? Another question is how do you rank the popularity of social bookmarking sites in the list and how and when is it updated?
